Description
I'll start by noting that Zhao Lusi is the main reason I started watching and that I adore her. ZYC is also really attractive, so that alone puts the series on my list of things to watch. After finishing, this actually ended up on my skip list since I was so disappointed in the plot and editing.
Con#1: I was furious about the first girl who stole Zhao Lusi's spotlight, while other people were upset over the impersonation of Zhao Lusi. I felt more comfortable when I understood that it was intentional, but the abrupt change in persona was startling. It wasn't an easy shift, which takes me to:
Con #2: This drama's editing is awful, awful, awful. I've heard that this series' production cost a lot of money, but couldn't a little extra cash have been spent during post-production to strengthen the plot? Everything seems to have happened out of the blue, with no apparent pattern or logic.
Con #3: ZYC's acting is far too eerie. The way he spoke and behaved may have been flirtatious to many people, but I thought it was really repulsive. Never mind the persistent surveillance for more than a thousand years, the impromptu visit to her bedroom in the middle of the night, the intentional taunting and stroking of her as she reached for the lamp—never mind anything at all. I sobbed uncontrollably when he spoke her name because it was too personal.
Second Prince Er Lang is a negative. They really did choose a good actor to portray the fool, dude. They succeeded so effectively that when he disclosed his identity, I was unable to register him as the Second Prince. Always, Er Lang was present. He also had a princely build, but he lacked the gravitas to fulfill such a position. Although he is smaller in comparison, I thought the First Prince (his brother) was attractive and believable.
Con #5: There are much too many plot holes. The conclusion sucked. There was no justification for it. Things always seem to conveniently happen or show up when they are most needed. Things simply happened. no explanation of why.
Con #6: With the exception of Xuan Zhu, none of the characters had significant character development. She maintained a high level of consistency throughout the drama, and even though she gave the ultimate sacrifice in the end, she was self-aware enough at that point to realize that it wasn't entirely selfless. It was enjoyable. She acted in accordance with her own desires and was loyal to herself.
The list of drawbacks is very extensive, but I'm sure there are more.
The only thing this drama has going for it is that its ensemble, which includes Zhao Lusi, ZYC, Dai Yun Fan, and Molly Wang, is quite watchable. The rest is completely forgotten.
